October 2007 President's Message

Jodie Thill, ASID, LEED AP

Welcome to a new year for ASID Wisconsin. I am honored to serve as your president for the coming year. Below are the words that I shared with the chapter at the annual meeting held at the Overture Center in Madison. I hope to see you at an event soon; you just might find a new connection or a new source of inspiration. Please check the website and calendar often as there will be many exciting events throughout the year that you will not want to miss.

get Informed      get Inspired      get Involved

As I was trying to think of what to say this evening, how to kick off the coming ASID year I clicked on the ASID National website looking for inspiration. Each time I head to the website I find a new nugget of information. What I found was a little flash movie talking about design, what we practice everyday. It put into images that which we try to capture in each of our projects – a human centered solution that enhances the spaces we inhabit. It ended with three statements: get Informed – get Inspired – get Involved. It fit perfectly with what I have been trying to put into words, what has been floating around in my head for weeks. Thinking about what this year can hold for all of us. Challenging us to take the reigns – to get informed, get inspired and get involved. It is, in my guess, why we are all here. We are all looking for something to spark our creativity, to keep us interested, engaged, to answer our questions and help us find successful solutions. It may be as simple as looking for information about an Industry Partner Member’s product you are thinking of using or as complex as finding information on the impact of design on the capacity of young children to learn. Information – it is what we look for in the greater world everyday. This year will be about continuing to keep you informed through electronic communications, both by e-mail and on the ASID Wisconsin website as well as to host talented speakers who will present information you need to know to keep ahead in the industry.

Inspiration, what inspires you? I am inspired by the many volunteers of this organization; how they work tirelessly for the betterment of the world around them in their work and transfer that energy for the improvement of their profession. Each member has a story, whether they have been members for 30 days or 30 years. Students, so full of energy and excitement may not even be exactly sure what Interior Design holds for them, but are sure that they want a part in designing better spaces for a better world. Seasoned Professionals who have seen our profession grow and develop into the leading Interior Design Organization. For all of us, ASID Wisconsin has something to inspire-either within us or within someone we encounter. There are so many new and exciting developments in the chapter I hope you check out. One that is very inspiring is the opportunity to connect members from across the state with our new ASID Wisconsin electronic bulletin board. Check the weekly e-mail blast for the past several weeks, and you will find information on how to register. It is a great way to connect with members of all types practicing interior design throughout the state. In the coming year, I hope that you will find many ways to be inspired; whether connecting with an old friend or co-worker, meeting a new member, or finding a fellow alumna of your design program, attending a program, CEU or building tour, or finding inspiration through the work or words of others. Maybe you will be inspired by the incredible design celebrated at the ASID Design Gala to be held on Friday February 8, 2008 – inspired to enter your own project. Take a chance to recharge your creativity.

I find the last words found of the flash movie to be most important – get Involved. This organization continues to amaze me with the incredible people that step forward to volunteer each year. Whether it is meeting with students, planning an event, coordinating other volunteers or balancing the budget, there so many wonderful stories to be discovered, all it takes is to get involved. It is simple to get involved as well. I know that it may appear that for some of us, ASID is a lifestyle, something that we eat and breathe. That is not the case for most of our wonderful volunteers. There is a place for each of you to contribute whether you can commit to several hours or several months. For those of you interested in volunteering in a specific area, do not hesitate to contact the respective board member. You will find their contact information on the website. We hope that you find the board and all of our volunteers open to your new ideas and accessible to share your thoughts. I know that we as professionals and as individuals are always attempting to find more time, but I do know that the time that is given to involvement in ASID Wisconsin can be fulfilling in so many ways. It is my goal this year to provide opportunities for all of you to get Informed - get Inspired – get Involved. I look forward to seeing you at a chapter event, or connecting with you via our new ASID Wisconsin electronic bulletin board soon.

ASID Distinguished Speakers Series

Sandy Gordon, ASID

Brenda Brady, ASID

Posted 2/28/08

Sandy Gordon, ASID (Sandy Gordon Interiors) and Brenda Brady, ASID (Brenda Brady Design) have been selected to be speakers on the ASID Distinguished Speakers Series. The ASID Distinguished Speakers Series is an interior design speaker’s bureau tailored specifically for ASID chapter- sponsored educational programs.

The course they are presenting is “Community Approach to Programming”.  Brenda and Sandy are in a position to share their expertise of programming from their business acumen and past project experiences accumulated over the past 25 years.

They have experienced the design/build community evolve unlike the programming phase which has remained stagnant.  Brenda and Sandy discuss the concept of community programming and share case studies of why this method is a great compliment to the updated design/build concept.  They focus on how interior designers can influence the community approach and structure of programming.  The intent is to introduce a new programming approach that creates a meaningful design and reduces costs and errors.

Sandy and Brenda have been invited to share their expertise as featured speakers at the Total Facility Management conference (TFM) in 2008.  They are excited to share their expertise with more groups locally and nationwide.  The course is approved for one or two hours of CEU credits.  Those who are intrigued about this topic can contact Brenda and Sandy to schedule a lunch’n’learn in your office or a class in your local geographical region.  This is ideal for the office that is working on LEED projects and Design/Build environments or the solo entrepreneurs that want to integrate multiple disciplines into their project scope.

For further information to schedule your course, please call or email Brenda or Sandy.

The ASID Wisconsin Chapter was a proud partner in this spring’s hottest design event in Madison, “Design MMoCA.” The Madison Museum of Contemporary Art (MMoCA), who approached the Wisconsin Chapter of ASID in May of 2007 to become a partner in planning the event, conceived the idea for the Design MMoCA interior design showcase.

The outcome of the months of hard work of all involved was on display at the museum April 24-27, 2008. Design MMoCA welcomed museum visitors to explore 16 unique room vignettes created by local and regional design teams. Each space was inspired by an artwork from MMoCA’s permanent collection, thereby showcasing both the incredible works of art as well as interiors designed by some of the area’s most creative designers. The museum staff and interior design professionals juried all submissions for the exhibit.

Our fabulous ASID Wisconsin members selected to design vignettes were:

  • CRB Interiors
    • Bill Beaudreau, ASID
  • InteriorLOGIC Facility Planning
    • Robin Stroebel, ASID
  • H. Krueger & Associates
    • Harry Krueger, ASID
    • Barbara Carpenter, ASID
    • David Wheaton, Allied Member ASID
  • Laurie Driscoll Interiors
    • Laurie Lodholz, ASID
  • Tania S. May, ASID
  • Sandy Gordon Interiors
    • Sandy Gordon, ASID
  • Indocara Global Home Furnishings
    • Natasha Vora, Industry Partner ASID

The four-day event took place in the museum’s main gallery, and featured a design lecture series, reading room, and lobby lounge in addition to the showcase of vignettes. Our own chapter president, Jodie Thill, ASID and past-president, Jessica Mahne, ASID led a guided tour of the exhibit on Saturday afternoon, titled “Designers on Design.”

A fabulous champagne preview party was held on Thursday evening to kick-off the event. This lively party offered flowing champagne, delicious hors d’oevres, and the opportunity for attendees to mingle with members of the design community while being the first to experience the showcase. Several ASID members from across the state attended to get a sneak-peak at the exhibit and support the ASID members who had designed vignettes.

Design MMoCA was organized in partnership with MMoCA, the ASID Wisconsin Chapter and the IIDA Wisconsin Chapter. Many products for the artfully designed vignettes were generously donated by ASID Wisconsin Industry Partners.  Big thank you to the Design MMoCA ASID WI Chairperson, Brenda Brady, ASID, who worked on the planning committee for several months to help bring this project to fruition.

Design MMoCA was generously sponsored by Rubin’s Furniture; Madison Magazine; Hiebing; M&I Bank; M&I Wealth Management; Wisconsin State Journal; Wisconsin Department of Tourism; Adams Outdoor Advertising; Iconi Interiors; and The Artful Home.

What a wonderful event! I am pleased to report that the contingent from Wisconsin (Deb Alton, ASID, Bill Beaudreau, ASID, Julianna Boerner, Student ASID, Bonnie Feltz, Allied ASID, Renee Degelau , Student ASID, Catherine Hempfling-Prossen, IP, Sandy Gordon, ASID, Pat Kluetz, ASID, Leslie Lawton, ASID, Jessica Mahne, ASID, Jenny Rebholz, Allied ASID, Noreena Scheve, Student ASID, Hollie Schick, FASID, Wendy Schaffer, ASID, Jodie Thill, ASID and Deb Woodward, ASID) had the pleasure of attending both a noteworthy and educational event as well as a valuable networking experience.

The three-day conference was kicked off with an Opening Night Reception comprised of live New Orleans musical culture, a wonderful sampling of local cuisine and showcased product from the event’s full program Industry Partner sponsors.

Setting the tempo for Interiors ’08 were the three keynote speakers. The first was Jean-Michel Cousteau whose focus was, naturally, on the Earth’s water ways and oceans and the direct effect humans have on this finite and diminishing resource. He stressed the need for education on all levels, an awareness of how we live and the impact that our choices have on the planet. He believes the term Global Warming has been much overused and prefers the term Temperature Change to more correctly define what is happening in our ecosystems.

The second keynote speaker was Rosemarie Rossetti who was an inspiration to everyone. In 1998 her life was transformed when a 3.5 ton tree came crashing down on her which paralyzed her from the waist down. Since this accident, her drive in life has been to help mainstream America realize the options for enjoying a comfortable lifestyle through discussions on how to marry universal design, green building design, healthy homes and technology. She is in the process of building a home that encompasses all of the above. Through hard work she has been able to bring on board 94 corporate sponsors to help her build. The construction begins in May of this year. (Check out www.udll.com to watch the progress). The home will be open to the public for the first year and by appointment thereafter, as an educational tool for all related industries.

The last keynote speaker was Bran Ferren, Creative Technologist, Ex-Imagineeer and three-time Academy Award Winner. His presentation was filled with his vision of the future of design and technology. He offered concrete ways to redesign innovation processes from his own experiences.

A Jubilation Event was held Friday evening, where an auction was held to raise funds for the Foundation. Starting the night off was a grand parade march across the street, stopping traffic in all directions. If memory serves me correctly more than $120,000 was raised that evening for the Foundation’s work.

The Educational Tracks for the conference were Business Expertise, Generational Impact, Future Trends, Luxury Markets and Society and Environment. It’s been highly recommended that all members of the Wisconsin Chapter of ASID should visit www.asid.org/interiors and check out the selected portions of the keynote speakers.

In keeping with the theme of this event, ASID has taken an eco-friendly stance by not having hard copy handouts of the event. Instead you can go to www.asid.org/interiors and download the handouts from the conference.

Capping off the conference was the Celebration Event, when a record nine members were conferred the highest title of Fellow.
