"Moving Forward"
by Wendy Schaffer, ASID & WRID
2009/2010 ASID-Wisconsin Chapter President
To our First-Time Visitors:
Welcome! If this is your first time browsing around on our website we’re pleased you have taken the time to check us out. You may be asking yourself, who or what is ASID?
ASID is a community of people driven by a common love for design and committed to the belief that Interior Design, as a service to people, is a powerful, multi-faceted profession that can positively change people’s lives.
Should you have any questions after you have finished your tour of our site, please drop us a line by clicking on “Contact Us” at the bottom of this page and we will be happy to get back to you.
To the Membership at Large:
As of October 1st, the 2009-2010 fiscal year has begun. It is with great optimism and enthusiasm that the Board looks ahead to the coming year. Constant through the many changes and shifts in 2009 has been our Chapter’s commitment to support its members and to continue to move forward.
Appropriately, our State’s motto is “Forward.” We have a strong work ethic in Wisconsin and it is on that basis that we have been able to maintain our momentum. Along with our innate sense of dedication, if we all make a concerted effort to get involved, the Chapter will remain the strong organization that it is. By reaching out to our fellow members, staying connected, and being fully engaged, we will continue to grow and reap the benefits of being part of ASID.
On the “business end” of things, our three-year Strategic Plan was generated from information gathered from the survey sent to all Wisconsin Chapter members this past spring. We also received input from individuals from each of our membership categories who attended the two strategic planning sessions held in May.
The Strategic Plan’s focus is:
- To engage all members to utilize the organization’s benefits and resources;
- To improve the effectiveness of Chapter Communications;
- To establish and implement a Chapter Public Relations Strategy; and
- To emphasize and improve Chapter Benefits.
I would like to personally extend an open and sincere invitation to each of you to contact me with any thoughts, suggestions or ideas that you may have as the year progresses.
I will look for each of you at our upcoming events and wish us all a successful, fulfilling and rewarding year for new and ongoing members alike!
Sincerely,
Wendy Schaffer, ASID & WRID

Announcement – Survey regarding Merger Petition from the state of Wisconsin
Posted 2/1/10
As members of the WI chapter of ASID, your feedback is always valued for the guidance of the organization. Today, we have included a very important and brief survey regarding a possible petition for the merger of IIDA and ASID from the state of WI. Please read the message from a task force coordinating this effort below and click the direct link to the survey at the bottom of the message.
Please complete the survey by February 19th. Thank you in advance for your participation as it is most appreciated.
Task Force message
In November, a group of members, as well as non-members, of various interior design organizations met and discussed petitioning both, IIDA and ASID, in support of a merger.
The goal of this survey is to gauge the level of support among the design community in Wisconsin.
Results of this survey will hopefully determine if there is interest to move forward and petition the organizations for a merger later this year.
Follow the link (provided below) to the short, 7 question survey. All answers will remain anonymous. Feel free to provide any additional comments in the box provided on the survey page, or email; asid.iida.merger@gmail.com
As this survey link is being sent out via multiple organization's email list(s), it is possible that you could receive this multiple times. With the desire to collect an accurate representation of interest in the industry, please complete only one survey. You may, however, forward the survey link to any individuals you feel may have been missed.
Please complete this survey by February 19, 2010.
Your time and opinions are greatly appreciated. Thank you.

NCIDQ Publishes New Practice Design Problem
NCIDQ has published new study material for Section 3 of its updated exam
The new practice design problem (PDP) will assist candidates who are preparing to take the practicum portion of the NCIDQ Examination. NCIDQ develops Practice Design Problems (PDP) to provide candidates with a practice exam that simulates the actual NCIDQ practicum exam. PDPs allow candidates to simulate the drawing portion of the examination and apply the grading criteria to their solution in order to identify strengths and weaknesses in their knowledge areas.

ASID Updates Membership Numbers
ASID membership numbers dip with the economic downturn but fare better than industry average
(10/12/2009) Healthcare Design Magazine
Posted by: Chris Gaerig, Online Editor
Like most associations and the interior design industry as a whole, the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) is feeling the effects of a strained economy, having experienced a 10% drop in membership over the past fiscal year, which ended September 30. While the membership drop reflects the effects that the downturn has had on the interior design industry, it is actually low compared to industry averages. According to a summer 2009 study from the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE), 15% of members in associations allied with housing and building industries were not planning to renew their membership. Even more dramatic, 24% of respondents in a follow-up, association-wide study plan to drop their membership at next renewal.
“The economy has hit the interior design industry especially hard as businesses and consumers tighten their budgets and cut back on spending,” says Michael Alin, Hon. FASID, executive director of ASID. “We are committed to helping our members through this economic slump and look forward to designers being able to rejoin ASI! D as the economy improves.”
The ASID is evaluating and creating new opportunities for its members. The Society is updating its current offerings, thinking outside the box to develop new programs and partnerships that give interior designers the tools they need to succeed.
“The number of opportunities ASID offers for advancing our members’ education, promoting and marketing their businesses, networking with their peers, and so much more, is unparalleled and continues to grow,” says Alin. “One only needs to look at our networking events or CEU offerings through ASIDUni.org to see how we continue to grow the Society for our 36,000 members.”
NCIDQ Co-Sponsors Interior Design Education Video Competition
Posted 10/26/09
WASHINGTON, DC—The National Council for Interior Design Qualification, Inc. (NCIDQ) has partnered with the Interior Design Educators Council (IDEC) and the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA) to host an interior design education video competition. The competition, open to interior design students, interior design educators and interior design practitioners, calls for the creation of a short video that will demonstrate the importance of established interior design education and examination standards. The videos will be reviewed by a panel of judges from IDEC, NCIDQ and CIDA.
This competition has been established to change the current perception of interior design – demonstrating that interior designers are well educated, examined and skilled.
“Increasing the voice of interior design by not one, but hundreds of designers is monumental to the advancement of the profession,” says IDEC Executive Director Jeffrey Beachum. “Now students, educators and practitioners all have the chance to define the profession and demonstrate their view of interior design and the importance of education and the NCIDQ Examination to them.”
“We look forward to witnessing how interior designers perceive their own value as professionals and how they portray that value to the public,” says NCIDQ Executive Director Jeffrey F. Kenney. “This competition is a great way to introduce to new audiences the importance of health, safety and welfare to the profession of interior design, showing that design is more than just putting paint on a wall.”
Three winners will be announced and each will receive a cash prize, certificate of achievement and an opportunity to have his or her video hosted on IDEC, NCIDQ and CIDA’s Web sites.
The competition begins October 19, 2009. All videos must be completed and uploaded to the IDEC Web site dropbox by February 15, 2010. For more information on the contest and instructions on how to submit a video, visit www.idec.org/videocompetition.htm.
NCIDQ Begins Five-Year Requirement for Exam Completion
Posted 10/19/09
NCIDQ has announced a policy effective in 2010 that requires candidates taking the NCIDQ Examination to earn the NCIDQ Certificate to pass all sections of the examination within a five-year period or retest. This five-year “rolling” window of time describes the way in which the timing accrues. Rather than one five-year fixed period of time, a candidate’s time “rolls” forward in five-year increments depending on when he or she passes an exam section. Candidates who do not take any sections of the examination within five years of being made eligible by NCIDQ will lose their eligibility status. Candidates who lose their eligibility status due to non-testing must reapply, meet the requirements in effect at that time and pay any application fees. For more information on this policy, click here.
In the event that a candidate does not begin the exam within five years, NCIDQ will destroy his or her records unless a candidate requests an extension. NCIDQ attempted to contact the candidates affected by this policy and has now created an online document that lists all candidates affected. The list represents those candidates who have not responded to our previous notices or whose mail was returned. NCIDQ has posted this list on its Web site at www.ncidq.org in the hopes that others will recognize these names and notify those people of this policy. Please review the list of affected candidates here. If you know someone on this list, please let them know of this destruction policy and have them call us immediately at 202-721-0220. We appreciate your relationship with NCIDQ, and wanted to keep you informed of our news and updates. Feel free to share this information and feel free to contact me should you have any questions.

Community Service Project: Salvation Army Emergency Lodge Room Remodel
By Jackie Posselt, ASID, LEED AP, and Heather Balistrieri, ASID
Posted: 11/18/09
On Saturday, October 10th 2009, the ASID community service committee completed their first annual Salvation Army Emergency Lodge Room Remodel. This emergency lodge, a former Howard Johnson Hotel, is located at 1730 N. 7th Street in Milwaukee and includes approximately 100 rooms that house individuals and families for an extended period of time. Each room includes four beds, four dressers, one open closet area and a single bathroom. The sole purpose of this inspirational organization is to allow people to get back on their feet by providing them shelter, food, medical assistance, and most importantly, a sense of community and hope. The Lodge relies heavily on outside organizations to help in remodeling efforts, so when ASID expressed interest in remodeling two rooms they were very excited.
Jackie Posselt, ASID, LEED AP, and Heather Balistrieri, ASID, organized and led two groups of ASID student chapter members from UW-Madison and Mount Mary colleges. Rounding out the committee was Carson Cooper with Tandus, Matt Cottick of Coalesse and the UW-Madison student chapter President, Anna Gimmer. Both schools were on board immediately upon receiving the initial e-mail inquiry and we were on our way to making this effort a reality. It was quickly decided to make this a sustainable challenge and guidelines were created for the students to follow, including using all Low VOC paints, recycled and reused materials for bedding/bathroom and tapping into local resources for donated items such as fabric and art work. Equally as important was to follow the basic elements and principals of design. Lastly, the team leader was given a $600 debit card and asked to stay under this amount. Each group was responsible for not only designing and producing the room, but being their own project managers and dealing with the challenge of staying within a budget.
Team Madison included room leader, Anna Gimmer along with Erin Hamilton, Sarah Gunnink, Sarah Jurek, Annie Rummelhoff, Lauren Miller, Hannah Dorsky and Samantha Moehling. They were assigned the female room and their theme was French Country. Design elements included two shades of blue paint, warm cranberry bedding and a beige area rug found in the remnants section of Menards. The room was also given a personal design touch with framed images of the student’s trip to China. Sustainable items included pillows and fabric that was donated by Bill Beaudreau, as well as lamps purchased at Goodwill. Erin and Lauren even brought along a sewing machine to recover pillows while the rest of the team painted. Very resourceful!
Team Mount Mary included room leader Sara Pudlosky along with Robin Kessler, Caitlin Collier, Tiffany Schutz, Michelle Zanon and Holly Zeige. They were assigned the male room and their theme was “Roots.” They researched the founder of the Salvation Army, William Booth, and incorporated his original mission of putting down roots and used that as an inspiration in this sustainable challenge. Andrew Pace of Green Design Center donated both colors of Low VOC paint – a vibrant shade of green which was used on the walls, paired with a subdued taupe shade used on the doors and frames. All of the bedding fabric was donated by Brad Lange at M&M Office Interiors and crafted by Robin Kessler, who is also the artist responsible for the room’s focal point – a hand painted tree with inspirational words to motivate the residents daily. Every dresser received a sea grass basket for personal items that tied in perfectly with a sisal floor rug. To keep within the roots theme, the drapery hardware was grape vines, and each bed received a live plant to promote good air quality, as well as a bright green bin of toiletries and a tote for under bed storage. The bathroom floor mat was made of bamboo and the wall features a black and white photograph personally taken by fellow Mount Mary student Angela Lynch. In addition to Robin’s hand painted tree, another highlight of this room is an original oil painting by Shannon Zimmerman – yet another talented Mount Mary student.
The room remodels took 7 total hours from start to finish (8am – 3pm). Easily, the best part of the day was upon completion, when each group met and presented the new room to one of its residents. It made all of the hard work worth it to see the impact these incredibly talented future designers had on the individuals living there. When asked if they would be up for another challenge this spring every single girl immediately said “yes!” They all unanimously agreed that this was a fantastic challenge allowing them to utilize everything they are learning in school and applying it towards a rewarding real-life experience.
The ASID community service committee will be meeting again in March to plan for the next challenge in April. If interested in participating in a room remodel this spring, please contact Jackie Posselt at jackiep@eua.com.
