2008/2009 ASID-Wisconsin Chapter President

With the dawn of a new year many choose to form New Year’s Resolutions. Some work very hard to fulfill all of their resolutions while others allow them to fall by the wayside, getting caught up in the day to day activities. What are your personal and professional goals for 2009?

Have you considered that ASID can help you accomplish your goals?

It is not news to anyone that our economic climate is changing. Today, as I write this letter to you, a new President of the United States is sworn into office. He spoke of all of the challenges and work that lies ahead. The work he speaks of is not only work that must be done by him but by all members of society. The same is true of our organization in the state of Wisconsin. We have a very solid Strategic Plan but because of the unforeseen hardships that have surfaced it’s more important now than ever before to be an active member of ASID-Wisconsin.

So, our first question is….What can ASID do for you?

THIRD ANNUAL COMPETITION ANNOUNCED FOR THE 2009 OASIS AWARD FOR OUTDOOR KITCHEN DESIGN

Posted 6/8/09

Kalamazoo Outdoor Gourmet™ and Garden Design Magazine Sponsor Awards for Third Year

CHICAGO, IL (May 13, 2009) – Kalamazoo Outdoor Gourmet™ and Garden Design magazine announced the 2009 Oasis Award for Outdoor Kitchen Design, the only national competition created to recognize exceptional outdoor kitchen design. The 2009 competition deadline is Monday, August 3, 2009. Residential and landscape architects, landscape designers, kitchen designers and interior designers, as well as students, are invited to enter this annual event.

“As two industry leaders dedicated to celebrating excellence in outdoor design, Kalamazoo is proud to sponsor the Oasis Award with Garden Design magazine,” says Pete Georgiadis, president of Kalamazoo Outdoor Gourmet. “Together, we have seen the outdoor kitchen market grow and we are proud to recognize those professionals who are producing truly outstanding designs.”

The competition recognizes site-specific residential outdoor rooms with an outdoor kitchen as a primary feature. The project may be real or conceptual.

The judging panel, consisting of five experts in outdoor design, will select the 2009 winner. The judges for the 2009 Oasis Award for Outdoor Kitchen Design are:

  • Mary Palmer Dargan, MLA, ASLA, APLD, RLA, CLARB, Author, Vice President, Dargan Landscape Architects
  • Jane Humzy, Owner, Designer, Jane Hamley Wells
  • Sarah Kinbar, Editor, Garden Design magazine
  • Bill Marken, Honorary ASLA
  • Mary Jo Peterson, CKD, CBD, CAPS, Principal, Mary Jo Peterson, Inc.
  • Michael A. Thomas, FASID, CAPS, Principal, Design Collective Group, President-Elect, ASID National

The panel will review the overall design quality of the outdoor living space, including innovative incorporation of equipment from Kalamazoo Outdoor Gourmet, effective kitchen design, integration of the outdoor kitchen space with the overall environment, creative and effective use of materials, and design value to the client.

The breadth of design possibilities is evident in the winning designs from 2007 and 2008. The 2007 winning design by Jon van Allen featured a private Virginia retreat that balanced the formal style of the home with a casual and inviting atmosphere. Dragonfly Design & Detail’s winning 2008 entry was an eco-friendly Florida Gulf Coast haven with the primary kitchen located outdoors and the sleeping quarters in a vintage Airstream motor home.

Both entries maximized the outdoor kitchen capabilities, starting with the grill at the heart of the kitchen and adding refrigeration, ample storage and counter space, as well as a side burner and fully plumbed sinks. Additional equipment included freezers, wine chillers, keg tappers, ice makers, warming drawers, waste and recycling cabinets, lobster boil pits and a pizza oven.

“Winning the 2007 Oasis Award gave me an incredible amount of exposure,” states Jon van Allen, RLA. “Through the spread in Garden Design magazine and the coverage online, I am still receiving calls from home and business owners who are seeking my design services. The amount of publicity has been amazing.”

“We strongly encourage design professionals to enter this competition,” says Richard De Angelis and Mifflin Hollyday of Dragonfly Design & Detail and winners of the 2008 Oasis Award. “Give yourself lots of time to think about your design.”

The winner will receive national recognition in a 2009 issue of Garden Design magazine as well as website coverage and exposure at the 2009 ASLA Conference. Complete entry information is available at www.OasisAward.com.

Photos of the 2009 judges are available upon request, as are photos of past winners and renderings of the 2007 and 2008 winning entries. For more information or to request an interview, please contact Elizabeth D. Cooley at 312-423-8714 or ecooley@kalamazoogourmet.com.

NEW: RealWorld DesignWeek 09 Important Updates

Posted 6/8/09

  1. Registration – Registration is now open for all professional, allied and IP rep members! It can be accessed online through the RWDW Web site at www.asid.org/rwdw. There is a registration link both on the landing page and under the practitioner section. The registration process has been improved this year and is very intuitive. We don’t anticipate any confusion, however if members contact your chapter with questions, they can be forwarded to rwdw@asid.org. Remember, there is no cost to register. Registration will open up to students on Sept. 1, 2009.

As a chapter board leader, you have already shown a vested interest in our Society and the future of the interior design profession. We ask that you strongly consider signing up for RealWorld DesignWeek to host a shadow day. We encourage all to sign up soon so that the registration site can become populated.
  2. Online Chapter Marketing Tools – ASID has created various resources to help chapters market RWDW on a local level to membership. These are accessed online on the RWDW Web site under the Chapter tab, and Marketing Resources link: www.asid.org/custom/rwdw/chapter_resources.asp. Please access these resources at your earliest convenience to begin promotion efforts. These resources include:
    • Marketing brochure PDF
    • Articles
    • Ads and other graphic files
    • Video Montage file
  3. Chapter Mailing – All chapters will be mailed 400 hard copies of the RWDW 8.5 x 11-inch marketing brochure this week (to the chapter office). These brochures should be distributed to members as your chapter sees fit—direct mail, provided at design centers, passed out at chapter events, etc. If your chapter requires additional brochures, please make requests to rwdw@asid.org and they will be provided. Remember that a PDF version of the brochure is also available online at the RWDW Web site, through the chapter marketing resources link noted above.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation in helping to promote RealWorld DesignWeek! After a successful inaugural year in 2008, we hope to see participation levels rise. As soon as the registration site is moderately populated, we can begin to send chapters reports to track member participation rates.

Please do not hesitate to contact rwdw@asid.org with any questions.

All the best!
Katie

Explaining 'Health Safety and Welfare' in 3-D

By Bill Beaudreau, ASID
Posted 5/27/09

Do you occasionally or infrequently have one of those days when you put the parts together and you simply want to share? Today is that day for me. Please read on.

Last week, I attended a seminar called ‘Language and Design’ at the IIDA Wisconsin Interior Perspectives conference. (please contact me at bill@crbinteriors.com for my notes as I will gladly share) Theodore Drab of the University of Oklahoma spoke about language usage by journalists in the shelter magazine media and by interior designers in professional journals. Essentially, we are being dumbed down by not using professional language. More importantly, he talked about how Health Safety and Welfare is based upon basic code compliance and how we have the ability as interior designers to start with that foundation. Then, as professionals we can enhance the environment through integrated interior design solutions.

Here’s how the parts connect. I was reading an electronic Interiors and Sources article 6 days later that mentioned a 3-D office setup, sponsored by NCIDQ, showing how Health Safety and Welfare works. I checked it out. It is a really simple and great tool to inform the public what role we play to provide for the well-being through HSW. www.reingoldweb.com/ncidq/ Our job now is to take it to the next level and show how we are true interior design professionals.

Thanks for letting me share.

ASID Members….Spread the Word.

Posted 1/26/09

Dear valued ASID Members,

ASID national has put a special promotion in place for 2009.

As a way to recruit new members, ASID is waiving the registration fee for new Industry Partners and Professional Practitioners.

Please spread the word to your interior designer friends and potential industry partners.

We are very committed to getting as many new members to join as possible and in an effort to do this, I have created a Promotion Code that waives the application fee for anyone applying for a new Industry Partner or Practitioner membership. As this will save IPs $25 and practitioners $100, I hope it will really encourage them to sign up for membership.

In order to take advantage of this offer, applicants must use the Promotion Code Chapter09. There is a line for the promotion code on the new IP application and practitioners can also write the promotion code on their application. Additionally, if a practitioner member is applying online, they simply enter in the promotion code in the box after they select the type of membership they are applying for. Feel free to use this promotional code when applying as a new member.

Best Regards,
Laura Schalk, ASID
Membership Director

WI Chapter ASID Member featured in the Journal Sentinel

Aga Artka, Allied Member ASID, LEED AP, Interior Designer/Owner

by Aga Artka, Allied Member ASID
Posted 4/20/09

For most of us, a cup of freshly brewed coffee and a copy of the Journal Sentinel make up for a Sunday morning routine. The Sunday issue of the daily newspaper covers variety of local topics, interior design, culinary and home improvement included. If you read carefully, you might have noticed that in the April 19th, 2009 issue, one of the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) WI Chapter members was featured in the Entree section.

Aga Artka, Allied Member ASID, Communication Committee Volunteer and recently awarded The Volunteer of the Year 2008/2009, was thrilled when the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel expressed interest in showcasing her home and ultimately one of her first interior design projects. Aga and her husband Brian have lived in this house for three years and are proud of the way it presents itself. Nearly all the friends and family members who visited described it as cozy, cute and comfortable.  Aga, with Brian’s involvement, has used paint as the main element to express the emotion and the function of each space. Having always been fascinated by the physiological and psychological impact of color on humans, as well as being a huge fan of Josef Alberts and his unique approach to color,  Aga has taken all her knowledge and ideas and applied it in the design of her and her husband’s first home.

Since January of 2009,  Aga is successfully making a difference in the Milwaukee community by providing interior design services to residential as well as small commercial and hospitality customers who want to improve their living and/or working standards by implementing Aga’s functional and sustainable design solutions. Aga is the sole designers and owners of Aga Artka Interior Design LLC.

ASID – WI members and participants "speculating" about one another

Rebecca Klotz, ASID; Liesbet Trappenburg (speaker) and Catherine Hempfling-Prossen, ASID

By Rebecca Klotz, ASID
Posted: 5/21/09

Juggling work and life was the subject of the latest ASID-WI program held on Tuesday, May 12, 2009 – ‘You Are Not Your Job!  How to Create Sustainable Work / Life Balance’ presented by Liesbet Trappenburg.  The seminar is part of ASID National Distinguished Speaker Series sponsored by Broan/Nutone/Best.  Liesbet used her experience in the corporate world as a backdrop for her program to help the participants understand the difference between work and life. “Who you are is what you do, which should be who you are is what you value” Liesbet said.  Liesbet engaged the audience in a few group exercises. One exercise helped determine, through the discovery of core values, our correct balance in life.  Another exercise that Liesbet had the group participate in was using the intuition to speculate about another person in the room.  This was a very fun exercise. To everyone's surprise, speculations appeared to be 85 – 95% accurate even though participants didn’t know each other. Liesbet used this exercise to show us that we should trust our intuition; that “intuition is an accurate, reliable, and efficient decision-making tool.”  Lastly, Liesbet went over her ‘burnout” checklist, which displayed factors and symptoms of burnout. With the current state of the economy and everyone trying to do more with less, Liesbet’s program was very timely and will hopefully help fellow members alleviate some of their current stress load and create a better ‘work/life balance.
