Message From the President: Graduation 2008

As spring fights off the winter chill, I think that we are all more than ready for the change in the seasons. Spring brings with it much excitement for ASID Wisconsin. Please check out the calendar for the many upcoming events including the next state board meeting and tour of the new cancer center at Froedtert Hospital in Milwaukee, May 13; Design cafés in your area and ASID Student Portfolio and Design Shows around the state.

With spring comes the end of the academic year, but also time for the graduation of many of our ASID Wisconsin student members and the realities of working life. I know how much time and effort, late nights and hours in the studio that you spend pulling together final projects, writing the last of your papers and putting the finishing touches on your portfolios and resumes. These are hours that will pay off in preparation for interviews and first days of your professional lives. For some of you, it will be returning to a new professional experience, now that you have changed career directions. I know that most of you have completed internships, invaluable opportunities to experience firsthand the life and work of the profession of which you are soon to join the ranks. Thank you to all Allied and Professional ASID members as well as members of other professional organizations for making the commitment to students, by opening up your offices and showrooms to interns. You help to bridge the transition for students and create an experience vital to their future success.

For some of you, I realize that your next step is to continue to further your formal education, with an advanced degree in design or a related field. For others, you may be ready to take a break from the rigors of college and university life - you are ready to be done with homework, papers and most of all tests. While it is a different type of learning, please know that it is important that you continue your commitment to education throughout your professional life. It may not be a formal endeavor like you are familiar with in the scholastic setting, but it is vital as a practicing Interior Designer that you keep up with the many changes to the built environment and the profession. Lifelong learning is a key to keeping at the top of your profession and adding value to your employer, colleagues and most importantly your clients, present and future. Through presentations, lectures and tours you will complete continuing education units (CEU’s) to keep up the high level of professionalism that you started by completing your degree. ASID Wisconsin strives to be a venue for you to complete your CEU’s as well as gaining important information on issues facing designers about their specialties and the professional as a whole.

I hope that ASID will continue to be a part of your professional and personal life as an Interior Designer or as you venture out in a related field or experience. By advancing your student membership to allied membership in ASID, you will set yourself apart in the industry by letting your employer, your peers and your clients know that you hold yourself to a high standard of professionalism. For more information on Student Membership Advancement, click here.

I have had the pleasure of meeting many of our graduating seniors and have enjoyed discussing your future plans. I am encouraged that many of you aim to further the future and professionalism of Interior Design by sitting for the NCIDQ Examination once you have completed your experience requirements, then joining the ranks of professional membership in the American Society of Interior Designers. What is important to note is that while this goal is lofty and very exciting, it asks something of all members of ASID: mentoring, support and building the strong foundation that is so vital to success in the first few years out of school. Many of you know that our profession has received numerous challenges from outside sources. They argue that ours is not a profession that is important to the health, safety and welfare of the public. I know that many of you prove our challengers thinking faulty by the projects that you work on each and every day. We must lead by example and show the public and our legislators that Interior Design is vital to the success of how people live, work and play. To all of you who are graduating, I wish you success and know that the future of the profession shines bright.

My best wishes for your future success and may ASID and ASID Wisconsin be a part of your future.

Student Chapter Hosts Lighting CEU in Madison

MATC students, UW-Madison students, faculty and professionals relax and enjoy a bite to eat

On October 11th, the MATC ASID Student Chapter hosted a special event at the famous ETC World Headquarters in Middleton. ETC is a global entertainment and architectural lighting company dedicated to providing customers with the best and most innovative lighting products, services and solutions. This event was a unique opportunity for students and professionals to network and for professionals to earn a continuing education credit. The night began with food and networking. It was a good time for students to meet and mingle with professionals in an informal and laid back environment. ETC's CEO Fred Foster was gracious enough to come in and take small groups around the building for a tour that highlighted some of the revolutionary design concepts that were implemented there. The night was capped off with a seminar that was presented by Fred. He introduced the designers in attendance to some of the nitty-gritty details of the lighting world, as well as giving a compelling argument as to why incandescent light sources should not be done away with.

The event was a great success. The attendees were treated to a great mix of fun and education. Students and professionals alike were able to increase their knowledge of lighting and how to better utilize lighting design principals in their work environment.
