ASID Lauds Oklahoma Law to Legally Recognize the Interior Design Profession
Number of States and Jurisdictions with Interior Design Legislation Now Is 26
(WASHINGTON, D.C., May 16, 2006) -The American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) lauds the new Oklahoma law, the State Architectural and Interior Designers Act, which registers professional interior designers in the state. Oklahoma Gov. Brad Henry (D) signed the bill into law on May 15, 2006. With his signature, Oklahoma becomes the 26th U.S. state and jurisdiction to legally recognize the interior design profession.
"With Gov. Henry's signature, the citizens of Oklahoma will know that when they hire an interior designer in the state, they are hiring someone who meets baseline professional standards of education, examination and experience," said ASID President Robert Wright, FASID. "The law will raise the accountability of interior designers in Oklahoma to the betterment of consumers in the state. Professional interior design legislation protects the health, safety and welfare of consumers."
"ASID remains absolutely committed to advancing the interior design profession by advocating the passage of interior design legislation in every U.S. state and jurisdiction," continued Wright.
To use the title "interior designer" in Oklahoma, professionals must meet the education and experience requirements set by the law (a combination of six years of education and experience) and pass the qualifying examination for interior designers, administered by the National Council for Interior Design Qualification. They also must register with the joint Board of Governors of the Licensed Architects, Landscape Architects and Interior Designers.
"ASID gives a standing ovation to the efforts of the Oklahoma Interior Design Coalition, for without its members' efforts, the passage of this bill wouldn't have become a reality," said Linda Newton, FASID, chair, ASID Legislative and Codes Advisory Council. "Members of the ASID Oklahoma Chapter played an integral role in the formation and strategic vision of the coalition. The Society applauds their dedication and encourages members in other ASID chapters to get involved in legislative efforts in their states."
Eight Canadian provinces also legally recognize the interior design profession. For more information on interior design legislation, please visit www.asid.org. Submissions are to have been completed within the last two years.
Special attention will be given to submissions for an entire residence but also encouraged are creative or innovative one room projects, concepts, cabinet drawings, elevations and clever ideas that showcase effective criteria-based solutions.
